District 142 will be implementing a new SEL curriculum titled "Second Step". Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
In collaboration with Mrs. Kukulka, Kerkstra School Social Worker, these lessons will take place weekly in the classroom setting and replace our former Character Education program. Please see Mrs. Kukulka's weebly for additional ways to reinforce the curriculum at home. Be sure to check out the family letter and home links: http://d142-nkukulka.weebly.com/second-step.html This is just a friendly reminder that field trip forms and money ($14) are due TOMORROW (November 6)! If students do not have their forms and money, we will not be able to accept late forms because we have to turn in requests for tickets.
Also, students should wear Red, White, and Blue tomorrow (November 6) AND Friday (November 8) for Veterans Day. Tomorrow we will be filming our Veterans Day videos and Friday we will have our assembly. Don't Forget!
We are offering a very exciting fundraiser this year! For $15, students and families can receive a fundraiser card that will give you many discounts in local restaurants and shops. This includes Dunkin' Donuts, Domino's Pizza, and more! If you need a new order form, please email me and I will send one home with your student. Thank you for supporting our schools! Hello Room 29 Parents and Family!
We are still in need of a Room Parent for our classroom! The Room Parent is primarily responsible for organizing our 3 parties throughout the year, along with the help of other parent volunteers. We will be having a Head Room Parent meeting in late September, so we need to find someone soon! Please consider helping us out! Let me know by email if you are willing to be our Room Parent. Thanks! Ms. Johnson Our reading curriculum sends home homework most days. Many of the days ask students to read 20 minutes, then answer a question from their "Homework Prompts" bookmark. I wanted to publish those prompts here in case students misplace or forget those bookmarks.
1. What is the theme or main idea of the text? What are some key details that support the main idea? 2. What do the illustrations tell you? How do they help you understand the words? 3. What questions do you have now after reading? What would you like to learn more about? Why? 4. What are the most important facts you learned from reading? 5. What is the most interesting fact you learned today? 6. How does what you read today connect with what you've learned in other lessons? 7. Describe in depth a character with evidence from the text. 8. Describe in depth a setting with evidence from the text. 9. Describe in depth one event with evidence from the text. 10. Choose one new word from your reading today and analyze it. Encourage students to read different types of texts, and to choose a variety of questions! Students have been participating in a Domino's Fundraiser over the past 2 weeks. The cards sell for $10 and allow you to receive buy one get one free large pizzas for a select period of time. Every card sold helps raise money for our school! Additionally, students can earn a variety of prizes depending on the amount of cards they sell. The money and forms are due this coming Monday, March 11.
Students have the opportunity to earn a Six Flags ticket just by reading! If you log your student's reading every day on the Pink Read to Succeed form that went home, they are eligible to receive a ticket once they have read 6 hours. These forms are due on February 20th. If you need a new form, please let me know and I will make sure one goes home with your student. Thank you!
The next collection day for Box Tops is February 22. The class that brings the most Box Tops in will win extra recess! If you have any box tops at home, please send them in!
